Description

New York Cares is New York City's award-winning volunteer organization. Everyday throughout the year, volunteers engage in impactful programming that addresses urban poverty, with three overarching goals: (1) to meet immediate needs such as providing meals to the hungry, (2) to offer longer-term education services and other support to help individuals break the cycle of poverty, and (3) to beautify the City by revitalizing public spaces. Annually, New York Cares engages 63,500 volunteers on projects that will help 400,000 at-risk New Yorkers.

Impact and Outcomes

New York Cares’ high-quality and cost-effective VITA Tax Preparation Program is free for the sites and the clients who receive the services.
Last year, New York Cares’ VITA Tax Preparation Program processed nearly 12,000 tax returns for a total of more than $20 million in tax refunds and credits for disadvantaged families citywide.
Overall, New York Cares annually engages 63,500 volunteers to fill 195,000 volunteer positions that serve 400,000 New Yorkers in education, immediate needs, and revitalization projects.

What Major Funders Say

Mission & Goals

New York Cares meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.  In 1987, a group of young professionals founded the organization when they discovered a lack of hands-on volunteer opportunities that had marked community impact and could fit around their busy schedules. Today, New York Cares is the leading volunteer management organization in New York City.  Annually, we engage more than 63,500 New Yorkers in volunteer programs, carefully designed to provide maximum community impact.  We strive to make becoming a volunteer as easy as possible and to ensure that volunteers can expand our Community Partners’ ability to serve clients and further their missions. Our volunteer programs are designed in direct response to community need and address three distinct issue areas: improving education, meeting immediate needs, and revitalizing public spaces.

Program

New York Cares Tax Preparation program provides free tax preparation to nearly 12,000 underserved New Yorkers, many of whom might otherwise fall victim to predatory “instant refunds.” Volunteers will return $20 million to low-income communities, putting approximately $1,600 back in the pockets of individuals whose annual income may average only $18,000.

New York Cares offers VITA Tax Preparation program at four New York City agencies: ARIVA, Food Bank for New York City, Financial Clinic, and Grow Brooklyn. It recruits, trains, and manages the groups of volunteers whoa t these sites prepare tax returns at no cost to the participants or the four agencies. As a requirement to partner with New York Cares for the VITA program, the agencies work to promote individual weather and economic development in low- to moderate-income communities, and offer services like financial education to their clients to help them extend the reach of their tax refunds and credits.

New York Cares’ VITA program is distinctive because of the power and efficiency of its volunteers, and its strong management of the program. They provide the volunteer management services that their VITA sites cannot provide because of time and cost constraints.

Impact

New York Cares tracks quantitative information, including the number and type of volunteer opportunities they implement, the number of sites where they provide their programs, the hours of service provided by their volunteers, the number of tax returns completed, the average tax return amount, the average annual income of clients served through their tax preparation program, etc. New York Cares closely watches the results of its quantitative analysis, and tests theories about unexpected results. New York Cares findings translate directly into their strategies for addressing emerging challenges. Below are the outcomes over the last five years of their VITA Tax Preparation Program.

In addition to its quantitative analysis, New York Cares also solicits and receives qualitative feedback from its Community Partners (the sites where NY Cares offers programming), volunteers and Team Leaders through post-project and annual surveys. Volunteer and Community Partner Relations staff and Program Managers review evaluations regularly, enabling New York Cares to continually improve individual projects, volunteer training, and agency relationships.

Growth Plan

This year, New York Cares expects to recruit 350 volunteers who will process 14,000 tax returns for $20 million in tax refunds and credits for low-income New Yorkers.
