About Us

Overview

The Social Impact Exchange’s purpose is to:

  • Share and develop knowledge that leads to successful execution of local, national and international scaling efforts
  • Facilitate increased financing of scaling initiatives through collaborative funding opportunities and venues
  • Develop infrastructure that helps build the field of scaling social impact

Part of the intent of the Social Impact Exchange is to establish a learning community of knowledgeable expansion funders, advisors, intermediaries, practitioners and other social sector leaders.

Opportunity

Knowledge of effective practices for selecting, planning and financing initiatives that scale social impact is in a relatively early stage of development. In some cases high-quality research and learning have not been broadly accessed. In other cases, there is simply too little known about successful growth strategies. At the same time, there exist very few opportunities for foundations, institutions and individuals to jointly fund programs going to scale.

The Social Impact Exchange is dedicated to filling these “ gaps” by advancing knowledge that leads to more effective growth financing and implementation, and by providing safe, venues to collaboratively fund well-vetted growth opportunities.

The Exchange offers its members an array of resources and services to learn more about scaling social impact and to become more effective in their support of high-impact initiatives that are scaling-up.

The Members have opportunities to participate in expansion initiatives, contribute their expertise, and jointly develop knowledge that advances the field. A Steering Committee of members will help guide overall activities, and members can join a variety of working groups on issues and topics that interest them. Join a Working Group!

A Note about Terminology

Growth of nonprofit organizations can take many forms. Throughout this site the terms "growth", "scaling", "replication", "expansion", "dissemination", and "spreading" are all used to describe increased activity in pursuit of social mission. Each can be construed to have a slightly different meaning, e.g., program replication can be more directly associated with a type of franchising in different geographies, whereas scaling can mean significantly increased operations but not necessarily geographic spread. While the distinctions are valid,we use these terms inter-changeably on this site so that the definition and discussion is not limited to any one form of growth.
